Further CAT4 Training: Teachers

This course provides the opportunity for classroom teachers in schools currently using CAT4 to explore the CAT4 Individual Report in more depth to gain a greater understanding of the data and what this tells them about each student.

By exploring student case studies and introducing current educational research it will support their professional development, encouraging them to reflect on their own teaching practices so that they can use the CAT4 data to appropriately and effectively support individuals and groups of students in their classroom.

This online course is designed for teachers who wish to:

• Feel confident in understanding different CAT4 student profiles
• Develop teaching pedagogy and skills in line with current educational research
• Reflect on your current classroom practice and plan actions for moving forward, to ensure all students can reach their full potential. 

Week 1:

• Overview of the CAT4 assessment
• Develop your understanding of the standardised scores in the CAT4 reports
• Analyse different types of CAT4 profiles, e.g. verbal deficit, spatial bias, high ability, low ability

Week 2:

• Find out what you know about current pedagogical theory
• Develop your understanding of feedback and how CAT4 supports you in using it effectively
• Consider the impact of different classroom practices on student learning

Week 3:

• Identify and analyse low ability CAT4 profiles
• Develop your understanding of effective classroom strategies that can be used to support students with a low cognitive ability
• Recognise the impact of reviewing previous learning on students’ memory

Week 4:

• Identify and analyse CAT4 profiles of students with a verbal deficit
• Develop your understanding of effective classroom strategies that can be used to support students with a verbal deficit
• Evaluate how you are planning and using modelling and questioning in your classroom

Week 5:

• Identify and analyse CAT4 profiles of students with a spatial bias
• Develop your understanding of effective classroom strategies that can be used to support students with a spatial bias
• Evaluate how you can plan for and use alternative strategies and scaffolding in your classroom

Week 6:

• Identify and analyse CAT4 profiles of students with a high ability
• Develop your understanding of effective classroom strategies that can be used to support students with a high ability
• Evaluate the level of challenge provided for your students

• The course lasts six weeks and requires a commitment of up to three hours per week, including self-guided activity
• Participants can schedule their activity at times that are convenient for them
• Your active completion of all modules and assessments is a pre-requisite of certification.

• Schools that are new to CAT4 testing, or new staff from established users of CAT4

The training course is on demand and will last six weeks. It requires a commitment of up to three hours per week, through an online portal. Participants can schedule their activity at times that are convenient for them, but should aim to complete a maximum of 1 module per week.
