Communicating the results
The decisions made and type of feedback given to persons being screened with LADS Plus will depend largely on the specific context of the individual and setting, however there are some general guidelines that are recommended:
- Ensure a high degree of sensitivity and professionalism – adjusting feedback content and delivery appropriate to the individual.
- Base feedback on the overall classification but with the understanding that LADs Plus is a screening system and will not provide a formal diagnosis. Test takers should be referred to a suitably qualified specialist assessor where a formal diagnosis is required (for exam access arrangements or concessions).
- Use the graphical charts to explain the nature and results of the tests in simple terms using specific information.
- Check that the individual has understood all information and answer any questions clearly.
- Explain that whilst the tests in LADS Plus do not measure reading and spelling in conventional terms, there is a high correlation with conventional reading and spelling measures.
- Explain that the Working Memory test only assesses a small part of memory capacity.
- Clarify that although LADS Plus is over 90% accurate, some misclassifications occur.
- Where appropriate, offer reassurance and guidance regarding the ways in which difficulties experienced by adults with dyslexia can be helped and supported, both in education and employment
