New Reynell Developmental Language Scales (NRDLS) - Decommissioning FAQs

1. What is happening to NRDLS?

The New Reynell Developmental Language Scales (NRDLS) will be decommissioned and will no longer be available or supported after 31st October 2025.

2. Why is NRDLS being withdrawn?

NRDLS has been a valuable tool for assessing language development, however it no longer reflects current best practices or educational needs, making it unsuitable for today’s practice.

3. Can I still use NRDLS if I already have it?

Yes, you may continue using any NRDLS materials you already own. Please note we will no longer provide updates, replacements, or customer support after 31st October 2025.

4. What alternatives do you recommend?

There is no direct like-for-like alternative for NRDLS, we have several universal and target screeners to support the assessment of language and literacy development. You can explore those using our SEND Guide. We suggest the following tools which together, provide a well-rounded picture of a learner’s language and literacy profile:

  • WellComm: A comprehensive toolkit for assessing and supporting speech and language development in children aged 6 months to 11 years. It covers many overlapping areas with ACE and includes over 150 practical activities. No specialist training required.

  • YARC: Assesses reading accuracy, rate, and comprehension for ages 4–16, helping to identify how language comprehension affects reading.

  • PhAB2: for ages 5-11 evaluates phonological processing skills, which are key to both language and literacy development. Suitable for identifying learners at risk of reading difficulties.

6. Do these tools require specialist training?

No. All three tools—WellComm, YARC, and PhAB2—can be administered by trained school staff, including teachers and SENCOs

7. Where can I find more information about these tools?

You can explore each tool on our website or contact your customer service representative for tailored advice on how they can support your setting.
