Assessment of Comprehension & Expression (ACE) - Decommissioning FAQs

1. What is happening to ACE?

The Assessment of Comprehension & Expression (ACE) is being decommissioned and will no longer be available or supported after 31st October 2025.

2. Why is ACE being decommissioned?

ACE has been a valuable tool for assessing language development, however it no longer reflects current best practices or educational needs, making it unsuitable for today’s practice.

3. How will this affect my current use of ACE?

You may continue to use any ACE materials you already own. Please note that updates, replacements, and customer support will no longer be available after 31st October 2025

4. What alternatives can I use instead of ACE?

Whilst there is no direct like-for-like alternative for ACE, we have several universal and target screeners to support the assessment of language and literacy development. You can explore those using our SEND Guide. We suggest the following tools which together, provide a well-rounded picture of a learner’s language and literacy profile:

  • WellComm: A comprehensive toolkit for assessing and supporting speech and language development in children aged 6 months to 11 years. It covers many overlapping areas with ACE and includes over 150 practical activities. No specialist training is required.

  • YARC (York Assessment of Reading for Comprehension): Assesses reading accuracy, rate, and comprehension for ages 4–16. It helps identify how language comprehension may be affecting reading.

  • Dyslexia Portfolio: A diagnostic assessment for ages 5 to 16+ that evaluates literacy, processing, and memory skills. It provides insight into phonological processing and working memory—key areas linked to language development.

While none of these tools replicate ACE’s full diagnostic scope, together, they provide a well-rounded picture of a learner’s language and literacy profile.

5. Do I need specialist training to use these tools?

No. Unlike ACE, which required specialist assessors, all three alternatives—WellComm, YARC, and the Dyslexia Portfolio—can be administered by trained school staff, including teachers and SENCOs.

6. Where can I find more information about these tools?

You can explore each tool on our website or contact your customer service representative for tailored advice on how they can support your setting.
